Lighting up Brum

Following the sensory treats of Sounding the River, A magical sound on the river, a final celebratory events of the Midland Arts Centre's (MAC) 50th anniversary, Birmingham is providing another sensory treat for the eyes with Illuminate, free outdoor light artworks in and around the Hippodrome theatre.

Taking place over three nights, beginning on Friday 25 October, the event features 360 degree film igloo, light inspired dance performances, street projections and the Lanterns of Terracotta Warriors exhibition from Shanghai.

Quite literally Roaming, Mr Wilson's Second Liners are channeling the spirit of the 24 hour party people and will be adding dancing and getting you moving during the event and on Friday they led a glowing procession from the Hippodrome Theatre to the Gallan Car Park for a performance of Echolalia.

The Lanterns of Terracotta Warriors exhibition is in the Gallan Car Park on Hurst Street, near to Sherlock Street, and runs from 6 - 10pm on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th and from 4 - 8pm on Sunday 27th.

The greater than life size figures are accurate representations of the terracotta soldiers but includes women and children and are lit from within.
The exhibition was commissioned in 2008 by artist Xia Nan for the Beijing Olympics with the lanterns inspired by the Terracotta Army discovered in 1974.  The figures have six different facial expressions which convey different emotions.

Lanterns are a traditional art form used in celebrations and festivals and each lantern takes 2 days to make by craftsmen whose use their skills to manipulate the bamboo and silk to create the shape.

Next door to the Terracotta Warriors is Echolalia which is a dance piece with light projections in a 'dialogue between layers of movement, gesture, colour, shadow and sound', which provides a sensory treat and which you can participate in following the performance by interacting with the colour and shapes in the performance space.

Nearby on the car park adjacent to the Loft Lounge is Southside Faces by Andy McKeown who has colourised as pop art posters photographs taken of people passing through the Southside area on October 7th.

You can see the work on Saturday from 6 - 10pm.
