In December 2012 it was announced that the Library of Birmingham receives £162k grant from the Arts Council to develop Grain - a Regional Photography Hub.   The funding is to undertake a two year project to create a new strategic hub and network for photographers.

The project will be called Grain. This is the largest Grants for the Arts Award given to photography in the region.Key elements of the project will include researching, developing and delivering new, ambitious high quality opportunities to strengthen photography in the region, providing sustainability and promoting the sector nationally and internationally.

The funding should further enhance the important role the new library will place on photography, particularly highlighting it's internationally important collection of photographs designated as part of the National Collections of Photography, http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/cs/Satellite?c=Page&childpagename=Lib-Central-Archives-and-Heritage%2FPageLayout&cid=1223092759622&pagename=BCC%2FCommon%2FWrapper%2FWrapper

Its scale is staggering, amounting to an estimated three million items spanning original prints, negatives, lantern slides, albums and books illustrated with original photographs, plus books and periodicals on photography.
It ranges from the mid-Victorian period to the present day, having been expanded by numerous commissions in recent years.
