Ramping up redevelopment

The weekend of the 19th / 20th March saw the demolition of the old spiral ramp between the Pallasades shopping centre and Stephenson Street. The demolition is the first step in the construction of a new entrance to the station which will open in 2012 when phase 1 of the redevelopment of New Street, the first half of the station, opens to passengers.

Work also looks to be moving again on the demolition of Stephenson Tower which is to be clad in scaffolding. Work was susspended for nearly three weeks in January after scaffolding collapsed in high winds. Contractors were warned that the safety measures surrounding the scaffolding which collapsed – on the south side of the station complex near Station Street – were “unacceptable.”; http://www.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2011/02/18/scaffolding-collapses-at-new-street-station-97319-28190648/
