Fair rise?

The 22nd February will see the Development Director (Bus) for National Express, Martin Hancock, attend Birmingham City Council's Transportation and Regeneration Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

The topic, for which many people would love to be a fly on the wall for, is the increasing bus fares and the following details are taken from a background report for councillors for the meeting. The fare increase in January 2011 saw some tickets rise by as much as 9.5 per cent, Birmingham bus fares rise for second time in eight months.

The fare rise was justified by National Express for allowing it to invest in a fleet of 120 new vehicles but has attracted significant criticism from passengers. Criticism of the fare rise comes as passengers see the second price rise in eight months and the reduced price evening saver is scrapped.
