The Victoria County 'History of the County of Warwick: Volume 7: The City of Birmingham' notes that the expansion of Birmingham in other directions leaving the densely built up older parts of the then town during the 18th century was made possible by a series of private acts. Shortly after the 1766 act which enabled Sir Thomas Gooch to extend leases on land he had inherited from the Sherlock family "some land 'pleasantly situated for building on in Bradford Street' was advertised 'to be given gratis' to anyone who would build upon it"; 'The Growth of the City', A History of the County of Warwick: Volume 7: The City of Birmingham (1964), pp. 4-25.
