On December 11th the Birmingham Post reported Rider Levett Bucknall hired to create Edgbaston's £30m dream. I blogged on the proposals to redevelop Edgbaston Cricket Ground earlier with images of the proposal, Bowled Out by Regeneration II.

Rider Levett Bucknall who have worked on a new £21m Headingley Carnegie Stadium with Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Met University will provide project management and quantity surveying services with the aim of delivering the new stands for the test match against India in the summer of 2011.

However, it seems the planned cost of the redevelopment depends on support from Birmingham City Council which has resulted in uproar from an Edgbaston Councillor;
Warwickshire CCC asks city council for £20m loan to rebuild Edgbaston. The club had admitted during the announcement of the plans it would have to borrow money but it seems they did not spell out the scale of the borrowing. The discussions with the council have revealed the cricket ground would need a loan of 2/3 of the £30 million costs.

Members pointed out that the council is facing a severe strain on its own resources and struggling to identify funding for major projects including the 50-metre Olympic swimming pool and the new city library.

Councillors are concerned that the cricket club, which has struggled to break even over the past two years, might not be able to afford the repayments. The ward committee urged the club to consider a cheaper plan, replacing the pavilion and media centre but saving money by not building a new stand.
