Electronic signs for accident prone Brummies

The Birmingham Mail has reported on plans by Birmingham transport bosses will put 31 new electronic speed warning signs across roads in the city which may spell the demise of traffic cameras.

The signs which have already been installed on the Aldridge Road in Perry Barr have proved successful and Birmingham City Council is investing £180,000 in more signs in the next few weeks with 26 fixed location signs and 5 movable ones.

“This is a local safety initiative that is being conducted in partnership with West Midlands Police.
Locations across the city that are known to have speed-related issues have been selected for the programme. The police wanted a degree of flexibility, so some of the signs will be operating on a ‘roving’ basis.”

Meanwhile the Birmingham Mail has also reported that Birmingham ranked in top three for accidents in UK.

Brummie bumps and West Midlands whiplash put the city third in figures released by the Endsleigh Insurance Services.
The list was based on the frequency of claims, with Slough in first place followed by Ilford. It shows there were 33.1 per cent more claims involving accidents in Birmingham than the national average.
